ジャーナリストの死も多い。ロシアではこの8年間で100人近くの記者が、行方不明になったり、不審な死を遂げている。高級紙「ノヴァヤ・ガゼーダ」紙のシチェコチヒン編集長、その後を継いだアンナ・ポリトコフスカヤ記者も殺された。

　ロシアのみならず、イギリスの記者も、フランスの記者も死んでいる。チェチェン・グルジアなどのカフカス地域を取材して生き残っているジャーナリストは数えるほどだ。

　そのうちのひとりに常岡氏がいる。

　いま、グルジアの現地には日本のメディアはひとりもいない。常岡氏のみが取材を続けているだけだ。だからだろうか、世界が注目するグルジアのニュースが日本のテレビに流れることはあまりにない。

　今回のグルジア紛争に関しては、とことん意見の対立するガルージン氏と常岡氏だが、「日本の無関心」という点だけについては完全に意見が一致していた。
